“We had a wide-ranging conversation with Maria Leonard Olsen, covering everything from parenting kids of all ages to addiction recovery to life as midlife moms. Maria says that the more she shares about fears and trauma, the more people she can help. Her self-revelatory book is just one way she is helping other midlife moms forgive themselves, and embrace their lives.”

Read MoreI am going to spend much more time with the friends and family members who are dearest to me – says Maria Leonard Olsen, an attorney, podcaster, TEDx speaker and author of ‘50 After 50: Reframing The Next Chapter Of Your Life‘-. The pandemic brought the tenuousness of life into stark consciousness for me. I surround myself with people with positive energy and have learned how to have better boundaries with people. I am a recovering people-pleaser and would like to be able to say no more easily to things that do not feed my spirit. I also have increased my journaling and meditation. These activities help me to stay in the moment. Life’s challenges continue for all of us, and all we really have is the present moment.
Interview with Thrive Global: “Bloom where you are planted. Helping others does not need to involve grand gestures (though if you are in a position to effect large, positive change in our society, I applaud and encourage that). Even calling someone who does not have many friends or family is making our world a better place because you are here. You may be the only sunlight in that person’s life.”
Read MoreReading Ellen Warner’s The Second Half: Forty Women Reveal Life After Fifty is like having one of those intimate conversations with each of 40 women from around the world as they share their formative experiences and advice for younger generations.
Their insights are particularly valuable in a country where intergenerational learning is often lost, where finding assisted-living housing for our senior family members is more common than moving them into our homes.
The Second Half profiles a curated group of interesting women who have hit their stride and used earlier experiences as “compost for what’s growing in the second half”, as one of the book’s subjects Luisah Teish, a spiritual anthropologist, aptly describes it.

Relaxed, mindful, yet disarmingly intense and so very powerful! She shared her story with me on that day, and now with the world through various platforms. She overcame a tumultuous childhood to live in a place of content. Through her writings, she has enabled others to embrace their uniqueness and accept their imperfect lives. She remains non-judgmental of how others behave toward her realizing that everyone has difficulty.

She is a biracial woman whose parents were forbidden by law to marry in their home state of Maryland in the early 1960s. She is the mother of two children, a lawyer, journalist and author of several books. Maria graduated from Boston College and the University of Virginia School of Law, and worked at one of D.C.'s largest law firms. She recently returned to practicing law now that her children are launched. Her books are outstanding! Mommy, Why's Your Skin So Brown? is her first children's book. Her latest book, 50 After 50--Reframing the Next Chapter of Your Life, has been used as a vehicle to help thousands of people across the country reinvigorate their lives.
