Session: Unintended Consequences of and Thorny Legal Issues Raised by DNA Tests
Most people take DNA tests to find family members or to learn more about their cultural heritage. Few realize that their quest to learn more about themselves can have far reaching consequences for themselves and their family members. I am an NPE, an attorney, journalist and author. Some examples of topics to be covered include law enforcement implications (see below), privacy concerns, insurance problems, paternity/fertility donor fraud, inheritance issues, retroactive child support, and name change statutes and procedures. The presentation will help participants navigate some of the unanticipated issues that can arise after one takes a DNA test.
The objective of the presentation is for NPEs and other attendees to consider the legal ramifications of taking a DNA test. For instance, by putting my DNA in the system, I have made a decision on behalf of all of my blood relatives. If they decide to commit a crime, they can be easily found by law enforcement. People also don't know that it is currently legal for life insurance companies to deny coverage based on DNA test results.
