Starting Out As A Writer? Here Are 3 Tips For Success
The art of writing dates back centuries; the earliest forms can be said to have started about 5,500 years ago in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq). Writing has become a profession for some and a hobby for others. Following in the steps of great writers can make one a great writer. This article seeks to share tips to help novices succeed in their writing careers.
Sign up with a writers’ club
As an upcoming writer, getting to be in a group with other writers can help you in your career. Joining a writers’ club can mean learning and getting ideas for writing from each other. The adage which says, ''two heads are better than one'' applies in this case. Writers' groups or clubs can be a source of motivation and feedback when starting a new project. This is more encouraging when some of the writers in this group are also new to the field. Writers can be accountability partners for one another, to keep each other moving forward.
Over the past decades, many associations or organizations have been established to support writers. Examples of such associations or groups include Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association of America, The National Writers Unions, the National Association of Writers, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and many more exist. Look for the one that best meets your needs. Also, find a mentor amongst the many successful published authors in your circle and ask for writing advice and guidance. They likely will be more than willing to give you a hand.
Spend time reading
Ideas come through extensive reading on different concepts. Reading other subject materials gives you a whole different perspective on many things. So when you sit down to write, ideas and inspiration come more quickly. Great writers of many bestselling books are themselves people who love to read. Read materials related to the area you want to specialize in. Try to find any flaws and what you would do to rectify them. When starting your session, find an isolated place, and to add a touch of luxury, maybe get a calming, relaxing drink.
Be self-motivated
Writers face many challenges. Both new writers and experienced ones will experience them in some shape or form throughout their careers. You should know that the journey to becoming a great writer may be slow and painful, and only those who are willing to go down that road typically make it. There can be situations where you will start a project and get stuck in the beginning or middle for days or even weeks (known as writer's block). New writers especially face the challenge of getting good publishers for their hard work, which can be discouraging. When this happens, keep in mind that the reward at the end is worth it.
Many believe that great writers are born, but with training, anyone can be a writer. To become successful at writing, one major thing that will set you apart is to practice.
